Bed Height for Older Adults: Measure the Whole Setup Before Buying
A replacement mattress changes more than the sleeping surface. A thicker model also changes the height of the finished bed. For an older adult, that can affect everyday access, so measure the entire setup before ordering.
Measure the finished bed, not the mattress alone
Record the height of the support platform from the floor, then add the mattress thickness and any topper. Compare that total with the person's current bed. Measure both setups in the same way; the height of an empty frame is not the height someone uses every morning.
Araamco Pearl, for example, lists 5-, 6- and 8-inch thickness options. Moving between those variants changes the finished bed height even when the length and width stay the same.
Watch the person's usual routine
Consider how the person approaches the bed, sits down, turns and gets up. Include usual footwear, walking aids and the space beside the bed in the discussion. Avoid choosing a universal height from an online chart when the person's needs have not been assessed.
If there are mobility difficulties, a history of falls, recent surgery or a prescribed care plan, ask an occupational therapist or other qualified clinician to assess the setup. Mattress shopping advice is not a substitute for that assessment.
Check stability and access
Look at frame stability, centre support and whether the mattress is compatible with the base. Plan clear access around the bed and confirm the route for delivery. Do not add improvised blocks, extra mattresses or unapproved accessories to adjust the height.
Choose comfort separately from height
Thickness and firmness are different specifications. A thicker mattress is not automatically more comfortable for an older person, and an Ortho label does not establish suitability for a particular condition. Compare actual models and ask for help interpreting the options.
See the Araamco Pearl Foam Mattress for variant dimensions and the firmness and thickness guide for the distinction. Take your measurements and any professional recommendations to the retailer before placing the order.
