Choosing Mattress Firmness and Thickness: A Practical Buying Guide

Firmness describes how a mattress feels under your body. Thickness describes its depth. They are different: a thick mattress can feel soft, and a thinner mattress can feel firm. Neither measurement alone tells you the quality of support.

Start with your preferred feel

Think about your current mattress. Does it feel too hard, too soft or uneven? Use that experience to explain what you want to change. Your sleeping position, body build and personal preference all influence how the same mattress feels.
