Mattress Topper, Pad or Protector: Choose the Layer That Solves Your Problem
Before adding another layer to your bed, decide what you want to change. A topper, pad and protector are not interchangeable purchases. The right choice depends on whether your priority is surface feel, light padding or protection.
Choose by purpose

Product names are not enough: read the specification. A padded layer is not automatically waterproof, and a protector is not necessarily designed to change firmness.
Check the mattress underneath
An added comfort layer is not a repair for a broken base or a mattress that requires inspection. If you notice damage or persistent unevenness, contact the retailer before covering it with a new accessory. Identify the original problem first.
Measure depth as well as length and width
A topper increases the total bed height. Check whether your sheets and protector can fit the combined depth without pulling tight or slipping off. Ask how the layer is secured and whether it can be used with your mattress and frame.
Consider cleaning and storage too. Follow each layer's care instructions separately; the fact that the outer cover can be washed does not mean the filling can be washed in the same way.
